Same-Sex Marriage Event, Friday 28th March

From 29th March Same-Sex couples will be able to get married in England & Wales! An exciting historic free event is being held by Newcastle City Council, Northern Pride and Unison, to mark the introduction of marriage for same sex couples. The event is taking place on Friday the 28th March between 4.30-7.30pm at The Mansion House, Fernwood Road, Jesmond, NE2 1TJ. There’s lots on offer at this event, sign the big card (and its huge!)  to show your support, find out what couples will need to do to begin arranging their marriages (the first can be held from 29th March for those who’ve already gone through the official process every couple needs to go through in order for a marriage ceremony to take place). There’ll also be an opportunity for couples who are in civil partnerships to find out how they would go about converting their civil partnership to a marriage (it is anticipated that this will become an option at the end of 2014). Registrars staff will be available to answer your questions and give you information and wedding brochures for you take away. Information from wedding suppliers will also be hand for you to look at. Highlights include: 4.30pm – Opening of event, 5.15pm – Welcome and introduction to the evening – Peter Darrant – Northern Pride, 5.30pm – A few words from the Leader of Newcastle City Council followed by a toast, 5.45 pm – Light buffet served, with bar available until 7.00pm, 7.30pm –  Close. Following on from the event take a look at the Civic Centre where you will see the tower light up in rainbow colours throughout the evening to celebrate the introduction of the legislation. Please book a place as soon as possible if you can as spaces are limited.
