On this page we are presenting information on drug and alcohol services both locally and on a National level. MESMAC is not a service that works around substance abuse but we can help you in finding information and the most appropriate service for you. We do offer a free counselling service where you can talk about issues that affect you but we would advise that you seek help around drug and alcohol abuse with one of the services listed below.

THE PSYCHOACTIVE SUBSTANCES ACT

The Psychoactive Substances Act came into force on Thursday the 26th of May 2016.
The Act makes it an offence to produce, supply or offer to supply any psychoactive substance if the substance is likely to be used for its psychoactive effects and regardless of its potential for harm. There are exemptions for caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, poppers and medical products.
Click on this link for the Act in detail.

PART OF THE PICTURE

The LGBT Foundation and the University of Central Lancashire would like to inform you about the latest findings of the National Part of the Picture project into substance use amongst the lesbian, gay and bisexual population of England, as funded by the Big Lottery. The 2009-11 report was officially launched at the end of July 2012, with many praising the robustness of the data and remarking on the striking patterns of usage and dependency that have emerged from the research.

The report shows that:

  • Across all age groups LGB people are much more likely to use drugs compared to the general population
  • Problematic patterns of drinking are much more common among LGB people
  • LGB people demonstrate a higher likelihood of being substance dependent and show high levels of substance-dependency
  • Significant barriers exist to seeking information, advice or help among LGB people

A PDF of the Part of the Picture 2009-11 report is available on the right but if you would prefer to receive a physical copy you can request one by contacting the LGBT Foundation. If you would like to be kept up-to-date about the Part of the Picture research project from the LGF, please visit their website at lgbt.foundation .
